What...This old thing?

As I have already mentioned, my father-in-law is from Pakistan.  Now some of you are thinking, "Wow!  A doctor from Pakistan!  I bet you could have all sorts of interesting conversations with that guy!"  Well, probably YOU could, but you aren't the weird white guy that married his oldest daughter, so that deck is stacked against me.  So after awkwardly sitting in a room alone with him for a while not saying anything, and knowing that my smiling and nodding only works if someone is talking to me, I felt like I should initiate some sort of conversation. Keeping in mind that one of our last conversations went something like...

ME: Ummm...Did you have a good day at work?
DR. Khan: er...vhat?
Me: Did you have a good day at work?
DR: Uhhh....vhats dat?
Me: your day?  was it good?
Dr: uhhh......(pause)........Vhat?
Me: (a little louder) You doing ok?
Dr: Yes.

So in attempt to keep things light, the best thing i could come up with was "hey, are your clothes comfortable?"  Next thing I know, he hands me this outfit that looks exactly like the one he always wears, which to me mostly resembles a karate uniform.   As much as I am trying to look like a Tai Chi master in this photo, I just couldn't get that goofy smile off my face.  I discovered it's actually impossible while wearing this clothing to be unhappy.  First of all, you could fit a whole family in the pants alone (my wife tells me her and her sisters tried this when they were little).  They are at least a size 75 with a drawstring.  I have no idea why he asked me what size waist I had before he handed them to me because i can't imagine why it matters.  But I will say this, they might be the most comfortable clothes I have ever worn.  If I thought I could get away with it, I would never take them off.  I would wear them to work and give staff meetings in them.  I could come spend a night in your house without having to use your sheets.  "No thanks.  Brought my own!"  They come in a variety of colors also, and I discovered they even make sleeveless jackets to go over them for formal events, like the equivalent of a sport coat.  So next time he goes to visit Pakistan you can bet I am putting in a request for some size 75 ninja p.j's of my very own.

Some things about nothings

So i am sitting at my pakistani father in laws house on thanksgiving weekend looking for ways to fill my time. While i do enjoy having thanksgiving in this house every year, which is a new tradition my wife and i started 3 years ago, it can get a little awkward for a white guy in the midst of what feels mostly like being in a foreign country. I should add that i am normally the only, or one of maybe 2, white people out of the 20 plus brown ones that show up here every year for dinner. There are weird customs (the men eat first, which reminds me of a charles manson movie i saw years ago), strange sounding language (i learned last year its better if i just randomly laugh and occassionally nod or say something confident like "yes" while they are talking), and at least one distrusting woman in brightly colored clothing staring at me like i am going to try and marry her pakistani daughter when i am finished ruining the one i already stole from Dr Khan's daughter line-up. So while i was reading a friends blog about blogging, it got me wondering a few things...
1. Why do people blog in the first place?
2. What would i blog about?
3. Would anyone actually read this rambling nonsense?
Since i have no idea how this works yet i will end this blog being curious to see if i get any responses to these questions.
